Engaged in Sustainability & Circular Economy
The mission of Briotherm XPS is to build the largest recycled polystyrene company in Romania.
- The vision of Briotherm XPS is to be the company that generates the most value from polystyrene waste and the manufacture of quality goods and products.
FAQ
What is EPS?
EPS, also called polystyrene foam, airpop, isomo or tempex, is an extremely light product, which is made of expanded polystyrene pellets. Each cubic meter of EPS contains approximately 10 million spheres or pearls, and each strand of EPS has 3000 air-filled closed cells. Therefore, EPS consists of 98% air and only 2% polystyrene.
How is EPS plastic recycled?
EPS is 100% recyclable, and the EPS volume that is recycled increases every year. Clean and contaminated material can be reprocessed before being reintroduced into the supply chain, while contaminated material can also be compacted and used for rigid plastic applications.
However, it is considered that its light weight may represent a recycling impediment, but the EPS recycling process involves shredding and dust removal on a dedicated production line.
What is EPS plastic used for?
EPS is used intensively in the packaging and construction sectors.
Due to its benefits, such as low thermal conductivity, aging resistance, mechanical stress resistance and low water absorption of EPS, it is deemed as the ideal material to be used for insulation, filling and land drainage.
Moreover, EPS has excellent shock absorbing properties.
The polymer is often used as protection for high-value items that are shipped, transported and stored due to its high energy absorption and compressive strength. Among the products protected by EPS are electrical items, consumer goods and pharmaceutical products.
The light weight of the EPS helps reduce the environmental impact of transporting items.
Due to the fact that it meets the regulatory food contact standards, food packaging is often composed of EPS due to its ability to withstand moisture and compression. This keeps food fresh, by isolating items and reducing waste.
